According to the definition made by the International Organization for Standards (ISO), standards are prepared as a result of efforts to provide an example in production, understanding and measurement, testing and analysis. Standardization activities are the efforts to establish and implement certain rules with the cooperation and contributions of the parties concerned in order to provide economic benefits in relation to a certain activity. Therefore, standardization studies can be carried out in all areas of working life such as quality, health, construction, industry, tourism, education, banking and machinery sectors. In particular, standardization studies concentrate on issues concerning the safety of people's lives and property and provide economic benefits and aim to establish rules and ensure the implementation of these rules.

In the standardization studies carried out by domestic and foreign organizations, certain principles are followed. First, while standards are being prepared, a simplification process is performed consciously and the number of transactions is reduced. As this work is an economic and social work, standards are prepared with the contributions and cooperation of all interested parties and are generally accepted. Standards are among the best alternative criteria. However, standards are changed over time due to the development of technology and new methods. In other words, the standards are dealt with at regular intervals and the necessary updates are made in accordance with the conditions of the day.

If a standard defines the characteristics and operating principles of any good, it also describes the methods of testing and measurement to ensure that the good is assessed against these criteria. If the method requires sampling, the number of samples to be taken and the frequency of sampling are also described in the standard.

Standards are generally classified according to their structural characteristics as follows: substance standards, product standards, crop standards, process standards and service standards.

Certification activities are also carried out within this framework and based on various management systems, product specifications or service criteria.

Certification bodies are required to be accredited from a local or foreign accreditation body before they conduct certification studies for any product, service or management system. Otherwise, the results reports or documents to be issued shall not have international validity.

The accreditation system is a quality infrastructure that ensures that the studies to be performed and the documents to be issued by the conformity assessment bodies are reliable and valid.
